What products are within scope for THESIS?
THESIS is designed for and used by all types of CPG and food companies, including private brand and national brand manufacturers and distributors. THESIS includes approximately 350+ product category level assessments, which cover about 90% of all products available to purchase in a retail store in-person or online.
THESIS licenses are purchased at the enterprise level by final manufacturers and provide transparency and insights into impacts for a product category at a company/enterprise level. Data for THESIS KPIs includes all sites, organizations, facilities, and relevant activities (except when otherwise stated in the KPI scope).
The scope of a THESIS assessment identifies what types of products are included within that product category. Reference the cover page of each THESIS assessment, which lists what products are included in that assessment’s scope.
You can use the "THESIS Assessment Selection Tool", available for download from our website, to confirm what products are covered by THESIS and to identify the right assessment(s) for the products you sell.
Scope for THESIS Assessments:
The scope of a THESIS assessments determines what products are covered by that assessment. Understanding scope of THESIS assessments means you'll collect the data you need, as well as ensuring KPIs are completed using the correct data for that assessment.
THESIS Product Category Level Assessments are:
- Product category based: A THESIS assessment covers a category of related consumer products. You can use our THESIS Assessment Selection Tool to understand what assessments are available and to identify the right assessment for the products you sell.
- Final Manufacturer Perspective: THESIS KPIs are designed to be answered from the perspective of the final manufacturer of a consumer goods product. Final manufacturer is the organization that controls production of finished products intended for sale.
- Global Production: Include your entire supply chain for that product category, including all regions and all of your retailer buyers. THESIS KPIs measure an impact or issue that occurs in product supply chains, so completing a KPI can involve going up the supply chain to collect data from multiple sites and multiple organizations to get a full picture of the total impact. Data for your THESIS assessments will include all sites and organizations involved, those not under the operational control or ownership of the final manufacturer.
- Activity Based: Cover all production activities of that product category. If you're a global company, data would include your global supply chain, including all regions and retail buyers. If you're a regional or national company, data for THESIS KPIs will include your entire supply chain involved.
- Includes Producer Brands and Private Label Products: Assessments include product data for both producer brands (also referred to as "national" brands) as well as for retailer private label products.
Please note that THESIS is intended for products sold to consumers, and does not currently include Goods Not For Resale (GNFR). GNFR is not currently within scope for THESIS.
What does "Private label" or "National Brand" mean?
Private Label: A private label product is manufactured by a contract or third-party manufacturer and sold under a retailer’s brand name. Private labels carry a brand owned by the retailer rather than the producer. Also referred to as "private brand" or "store brand"
National brand is the brand of a product that is distributed nationally under a brand name owned by a producer or distributor. These are products created and distributed under a brand name that the corporation controls. When complementing the pre-assessment survey in THESIS, this can also include regional brands.
